EVOLUTION OF THE INDIAN NATIONAL FLAG
INDIAN FLAG REVOLUTION The national flag of Indai, in its present form, was adopted on july 22,1947 in its evolution. lies the different phases of the fight of Indepandence and in its unfuling lies the story of India’s freedom.
INDIAN FLAG DURING 1857After the revolution of 1857, the first Indian flag was designed in blue color. The design was based on wastern heraldic standards with union flag in the upper-left quadrant and a star of Indian enclosed in the royal crown in the middle of the right. The flag was a symbol of the direct imperial rule of India. The flags of British India were varied, and the British Empire used several different banners during the period of its rule in the Indian subcontinent. Flags with the “STAR OF INDIA” emblem in their design are often referred to m,as the STAR of INDIAN FLAG, and were used to represent itself.

Various design were proposed for the first star of I ndian flag in 1863, keeping similar design adopted in other British Colonies such as Canada and Australia, combining symbols of Imperial authority such as the union jacka and the Royal crown with symbols specific to the colony in question.
The revolt of 1857 made, The British realized the important of the princely states and hence wanted to gain their support states and hence wanted to gain their support. Also, the Bristish were suspicious of the Russian invasion of India under the ongoing circumstances. the felt the need to unity theprncely states and use them during times of need.
INDIAN FLAG IN 1906
The first national flag of india was raised on August 7, 1906 in Kolkata.
Design: The flag had three horizontal stripes of red, yellow, and green.
GREEN | The top stripe with eight Lotus flower to represent the provinces |
YELLOW | The middle stripe with “VANDA MATRAM” inscribed |
RED | The bottom stripe with crescent moon on the left and a sun on the right |

In 1904-1906, the first Indian flag come into existence and it was by an Irish disciple of Swami Vivekananda, Sister Nivedita. After some time the flag is comprised of red and yellow colours. Red signified the freedom and yellow is symbol of victory. In Bengali words “BONDE MATORAM” was written. It also contained a flugs og “VAJRA” the weapon of the god “Indra”, and a white lotus in the middle. The sumbol ‘VAJRA’ depicts strength and lotus purity.
- INDIAN FLAG REVOLUTION1857-2024 Another flag was also designed in 1906. It was a tricolour flag with three equal strips of blue at the top yellow in the middle, and red at the lower. The blue strip consists of eight stars of slightly different shapes. The red strip had two synbols, one of the sun and the other of a star and a crescent moon. In the yellow strip, ‘VANDA MATRAM’ was written in the Devanagari script.
INDIAN FLAG REVOLUTION1857-2024 On 7 August 1906, the first unoffical national flag in india have been hoisted the Parsee Bagan Square (Green Park) in Calcutta now Kolkata. The flag consists of three horizental stripes of red, yellow, and green colour. It is belived that the flag was designed by Sachindra Prasad Bose and Sukumar Mitra. Let us tell you that the unfurling of the flag was being observed as “Boycott day” against the partition of bengal and the flag was hoisted by Surendranath Banerjee to mark the unity of India.

INDIAN FLAG REVOLUTION1857-2024 On 22 August 1907, the flag was unfurled by Madam Cama at Stuttgart, Germany. It is believed that the flag was collectively designed the status of the first Indian flag that was hoisted in a foreign land. It was also referred ta as the “Berlin Committee Flag”. The flag was simillar to the first flag except that the top , golden saffron in the middle, and red coloue at the bottom.
INDIAN FLAG DURING 1917
In 1917, the home Rule League adoptee a new flag. Let us tell you that the Home Rule League was formed by Bal Gangadhar Tilak. It was the time when Dominion status was being demanded in India. The flag consists of Union Jack at the top, near the hoist. The rest of the flag had five red and four blue strips. In the shape of the ‘Saptarishi’ constellation, it had seven stars. It consists of a crescent moon and a star at the top fly end. But this flag did not gain popularity among the messes.
INDIAN FLAG IN 1921
INDIAN FLAG REVOLUTION1857-2024 Gandhi first proposed a flag to the Indian National Congress in 1921. The flag was Designed by Pingali Venkayya. In the centre was a traditional spining wheel , symbolising Gandhi’s goal of making Indians self – reliant by fabricating their own clothing, brtween a red strips for Hindus and a green stripe for Muslim. By 1921, Mahatama Gandhi had designed the Swaraj flag. It was a tricolor flag (red, green and white). It has a spinning wheel in the centre which represented the Gandhi ideal of self- help.
INDIAN FLAG DURING 1931
In 1931, the Indian National Congress adopted a tricolor flag with the following features
- COLORS: Saffron, White, and Green
- SYMBOL: Mahatma Gandhi’s spinning wheel in the center
- MEANING: The colour were interpreted as:
SAFFRON | Courage and Sacrrifice |
WHITE | Truth and Peace |
GREEN | Fertility and Growth |
Spinning Wheel | Symbolized the progress of the nation |
INDIAN FLAG REVOLUTION1857-2024 The flag was adopted at the annual meeting of the All-India Congress in August 1931. It was also the bettle ensign of the Indian National Army.
INDIAN FLAG REVOLUTION1857-2024 The Congress working Comittee, at its Karachi meeting on April 2nd, 1931, appointed a seven member Flag Committee, which after modification to the charkha flag adopted a new flag in 1931. This was the origin of oue Tiranga in its current form though it had a Charkha in the middle.
INDIAN FLAG IN 1947
The Indian flag was adopted on July 22, 1947, a few days befor India’s Independence frrom the British on August 15, 1947:
- DESIGN: The flag is a horizontal tricolor of equal proportions of deep saffron, White, and dark Green.
SAFFRON | The saffron represent strenght and courge. |
WHITE | The white reoresents peace and truth. |
DARK GREEN | The dark Green represents fertility, growth , and auspiciousness |
- DESIGNER: Pingali Venkayya designed the flag
- INSPIRATION: The flag was based on the Swaraj flag, the fl;ag of the Indian National Congress, Which was modified by Mahatma Gandhi
- WHEEL: The flag originally had a spinning wheel in the center, which wasreplacedby the blue Dharma Charka after India’s partition in August 1947. The Dharma Chakra’s 24 spokes were taken from the Sarnath Lion capital of Ashoka
- METERIAL: The flag was originally made of khadi, a special type of hand-spun cloth or silk made popular by Mahatma Gandhi. In 2021, the rules were amended to allow flags made of polyester or machine-made materials
- RATIO: The flag width to height ratio is 3:2.
