MENTAL HEALTH 2024 , WHY IT IS IMPORTANT . Mental health is a state of mental well – being that enables people to cope with the stresses of life , realize their abilities , learn well and work well , and contribute to their community. It is an integral component of health and well being that underpins our individual and collective abilities to make decisions , build relationships and shape the world we live in . Mental health is a basic human right . And it is crucial to personal , community and socio – economic development .

Mental health is very important in one’s life , after the Pandemic the surge of mental health has arise a lot . Mental health is as important as the physical health . A lot of people don’t consider mental health as a major issue but it can actually be very fatal . In present time people are so stressed out , so burnout in their day to day life that the acute stress gets accumulated and burst out as Depression , chronic stress and a lot of mental problems . Mental disorders can be considered as a sweet poison , it can’t be diagnosed so easily by common people , it often gets mistaken by common sadness , it can only be properly diagnosed by trained professionals . So seeking medical help is very important .

Depression is not a choice , a lot of people think that mental is all about positive thinking , positive affirmation , having a good company but its neither a choice nor about good company . Its a disease and need to be diagnosed as soon as possible .

Mental health is more absence of mental disorders . It exists on a complex continuum , which is experienced differently from one person to the next , with varying degrees of difficulty and distress and potentially very different social outcomes .

Mental health conditions include mental disorders and psychosocial disabilities as well as other mental states associated with significant distress , impairment in functioning , or risk of self – harm . People with mental health conditions are more likely to experience lower levels of mental well – being , but this is not always or necessarily the case .

DETERMINANTS OF MENTAL HEALTH

Throughout our lives , multiple individual , social and structural determinants may combine to protect or undermine our mental health continuum . Individual psychological and biological factors such as emotional skills , substance use and genetics can make people more vulnerable to mental health problems . Exposure to unfavourable social , economic , geopolitical and environmental circumstances including poverty , violence , inequality and environmental deprivation – also increases people's risks of experiencing mental health conditions .

RISKS OF MENTAL HEALTH

Risks can manifest themselevs at all stages of life , but those that occur during developmentally sensitive periods , especially early childhood , are particularly detrimental . For example , harsh parenting and physical punishsment is known to undermine child health and bullying is a leading risk factor for mental health conditions.

WHAT EXACTLY IS A MENTAL ILLNESS

A mental illness is a physical illness of the brain that causes disturbances in thinking , behaviour , energy or emotion that make it difficult to cope with the ordinary demands of life . Research is starting to uncover the complicated causes of these diseases which can include genetics , brain chemistry , brain structure , experiencing trauma and / or having another medical condition , like heart diseases .

Anxiety Disorders

Anxiety disorders are a group of mental health conditions that causes fear , dread and other symptoms that are out of proportions to the situation . There are several types , including generalized anxiety disorders , specific phobias and social anxiety disorder . Treatment is effective and usually includes medications and psychotherapy (talk therapy) .

WHAT IS AN ANXIETY DISORDER ?

An anxiety disorder is a type of mental health condition . If you have an anxiety disorder , you may respond to certain things and situations with fear and dread . You may also experience physical signs of anxiety , such as a pounding heart and sweating . It’s normal to have some anxiety . You may feel anxious or nervous if you have to tackle a problem at work , go to an interview , take a test or make an important decision . Some anxiety can even be beneficial – it helps us notice dangerous situations and focuses our attention so we stay safe .

But an anxiety disorder goes beyond the regular nervousness and slight fear you may feel from time to time . An anxiety disorder happens when :

  • An interferes with your ability to function .
  • your reactions are often out of proportion to situations (overreactions).
  • You can’t control your responses to situations .

Children , adolescents and adults can experience anxiety disorders . Women and people assigned female at birth are about twice as likely as men and people assigned male at birth to have one . Anxiety disorders can make it difficult to get through the day . Fortunately , there are several effective treatments for these conditions .

TYPES OF ANXIETY DISORDERS

There are several types of anxiety disorders according to the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders . This is the standard reference manual for diagnosing mental health conditions . Types of anxiety disorders include:

GENERALISED ANXIETY DISORDER (GAD)

This condition causes fear , worry and a constant feeling of being overwhelmed . It’s characterized by excessive , frequent and unrealistic worry about everyday things , such as job responsibilities , health or chores .

Agoraphobia

This condition causes an intense fear of becoming overwhelmed or unable to escape or get help . People with agoraphobia often avoid new places and unfamiliar situations , like large , open areas or enclosed spaces , crowds and places outside of their homes .

Panic disorder

This condition involves multiple unexpected panic attacks . A main features of the condition is that the attacks usually happen without warning and aren’t due to another mental health or physical condition . Some people with panic disorder also have agoraphobia .

Specific phobias

A phobia is when something causes you to feel fear or anxiety that’s so severe it consistently and overwhelmingly disrupts your life . There are hundreds of different types of phobias , and there’s one diagnosis for almost all of them : specific phobia . Only one phobia , agoraphobia , is a distinct diagnosis .

Social anxiety disorder

This condition (formally known as social phobia ) happens when you experience intense and ongoing fear of being judged negatively and /or watched by others .
