KOLKATA
KOLKATA 2024 Kolkata which is the biggest city in India, is my favourite city. It was founded by job chamock in 1690 with three little villages-sutanuti, Kolkata and Gobindpur. The city is located on the bank of the river Hooghly. Kolkata was the then capital of the undivided India till 1911.It is the seat of culture and education. Kolkata is the fifth largest city of the world. The population of the city is over ten millions and it has an area of about 1500 square kilometres. The Circular Rail adds to the convenience of commuters. All these problems need to be removed in order to make Kolkata a better city to live in.
THE HOWRAH BRIDGE
KOLKATA 2024 The Howrah Bridge on the Hooghly is a Morden engineering marvel. It is a cantilever span bridge. It is built on support, the river is not at all stand out and join together. It has many arms of different lengths. One arms has a length of 564ft. Each of the two cantilever arms is 468 ft. The bridge was constructed from 27,000 tons of tensile steel and the cost of construction was 32,00,000/-. It took six years to complete the construction of the bridge. It was opened on 28th February, 1943. This 2,150 ft. long bridge is the fourth biggest bridge in the world. It has linked Howrah and other parts of the country with the great city of Kolkata. The Howrah Bridge has been named as Rabindra Setu on the memory of Rabindranath Tagore, one of the greatest sons India has ever produced.
THE SECOND HOOGHLY BRIDGE
KOLKATA 2024 The Second Hooghly Bridge which is named as the Vidyasagar Setu is the first cable- stayed bridge in India. It is the third largest bridge of its kind in the world. It has connected the twin cities of Howrah and Kolkata. The bridge stands on four huge pillars and is connected by 152 strong cables. It is 457 metres long and has long approaches on either side. The approach structures consist of viaducts and flyovers. The foundation stone of the bridge was laid by the late Prime Minister of India, Mrs. Indira Gandhi on 20th May, 1972 and it was inaugurated about twenty years later by the then Prime Minister, Mr. P. V. Narasimha Rao on 10th October, 1992. The total cost of construction was Rs. 388 crores. The bridge was built to lessen the growing pressure on the Howrah Bridge. It will also help trade, commerce and communication not only in West Bengal but also in the eastern part of the country.
KOLKATA BOOK FAIR
KOLKATA 2024 The Kolkata Book Fair’ is help in the Maidan every year. It lasts for a fortnight. The fair ground is a big enclosure with hundreds of well-decorated book stalls. This book fair like every fair of its kind provides a unique opportunity to readers to buy books according to their choice. The books are displayed in such a way that these easily arrest the attention of thousands of visitors every year. Book-lovers come to visit the fair from far and near. The Kolkata Book Fair has mainly generated Bengali readers’ interest in books of different kinds. Local publishers with those coming from different Indian cities join this mega book fair.
Cultural programmes are another major attractive of the book fair. The book fair is also an important occasion for publishing new books. The book lovers of the city as wel as the state eagerly await the arrival of the fair every year.
